“It‟s an ancient Roman ruin,” he told Ross in a professorial tone. “Mother and I have been digging here. This was probably a garrison where soldiers lived. We‟ve found all sorts of things.” He bent to gather up his coins and displayed them on his palm. “These are probably two thousand years old.”

Ross took one of the coins. “Romans lived here?”

“Oh, yes. They had a very large empire, you know. They conquered the British tribes, but they married them, too. A lot of Englishmen have Roman blood.”
